Location: Kapiti Island is 5km offshore from the coast at Paraparaumu about 50km north of Wellington. Boats run from the beach beside the Kapiti Boating Club rooms.

Kapiti Island is a sanctuary for native birds. Birds like Kaka, Tui and Bellbird are numerous but rare birds like the Whitehead, Saddleback or flightless Takahe can be seen too. Take the coastal track to the north of the island or walk to the summit. See http://www.nzbirds.com/Kaptiisland.html and http://www.kapititours.co.nz/kapiti.htm

If you really want to see the birds, bring binoculars! There were lots of people there who did not go for the birdwatching but for the hiking, which I might add, is moderately strenuous on the easiest path.
